As we enter May, which is Hearing Awareness Month across Canada, it’s estimated that as many as one in 10 Canadians is living with hearing loss. Adding insult to injury for those people, says one local hearing professional, is that shopping for hearing aids has become an impossibly confusing experience fraught with “information overload.”

That’s why Hanan Merrill, a Registered Hearing Instrument Practitioner and the owner of Nanaimo Hearing Clinic, is hosting a free seminar May 27 titled, quite simply, “How to Shop for Hearing Aids.”

“From Bluetooth compatibility to multi-directional microphones, the options available with today’s hearing aids can be overwhelming,” says Merrill. “There are so many companies advertising that theirs are the best, cheapest, most comfortable or what have you. Who do you trust? And how do you know what you should be looking for or what features you really need?”

Merrill says his seminar will include an overview of styles, brands and features, why hearing aids are only part of the solution and how to get the best deal and be successful with it. It will be followed by a question-and-answer period, and attendees will go home with an information package that summarizes everything covered during the session.

The obvious question, of course, is why one should trust the impartiality of someone who fits hearing aids who’s offering advice on how to shop for hearing aids.

“Some will think this is just a clever sales pitch disguised as an information session,” he acknowledges. “But there are so many variables that determine someone’s ideal hearing solution that simply selling you a hearing aid because it’s going to give me a bit of profit is a losing proposition for both of us. You’ll be unhappy with your outcome and I’ll start losing my reputation.

“I want to give you the inside information that will help you make an informed decision without any pressure,” he adds. “Where you purchase your hearing aids, or if you do at all, is ultimately up to you.”

“How to Shop for Hearing Aids” will be held on May 27 from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Oliver Woods Community Centre, 6000 Oliver Road in Nanaimo. The seminar is free but space is limited. Reserve your spot by calling 250-585-4100.
